Mahi-Mahi (Dolphinfish, Dorado) are some of the most available, hard-fighting, acrobatic, and delicious fish in our waters. They can be found almost anywhere off Florida's East coast in water depths deeper than 60ft. Mahi-mahi can be caught year-round, but the best seasons are Spring and Summer.
The most common method to catch Mahi-Mahi is trolling rigged ballyhoo. Split-tail mullet and flying fish are also quite effective. Brightly-colored trolling feathers and 6" to 8" chugger lures work as well. Troll along weedlines, near floating debris, and along current edges. When a school of fish is located, casting bucktail jigs and retrieving quickly across the water surface is a great way to fire 'em up. Cut up 6-10 spanish sardines into chunks, and toss a few freebies out to get the school eating. With 15-20lb spinning outfits, use 40lb leader and 4/0 hooks baited with chunks to catch the schoolies. Heavier tackle may be needed for mahi-mahi over 25lbs, but even large fish can be caught with relatively light tackle... although the battle may last a while!
